I-pad Aids Preservation

The WSSU Archives is working on a project to assist with both access and preservation of documents related to the early history of the University. This project entails the careful scanning of documents that are in danger of deterioration. These documents were scanned and attached to a metadata form so that the context of the document is not lost. These scans are then uploaded to the Archives I-pad so that researchers can still gain access to them without risking any further damage. The documents are still housed with the rest of the collection but are secluded for preservation. The metadata form was printed and included where the document was so that a researcher knows about the shift and we maintain original order. The goal of the project is to continue the preservation of the collection but also maintain a high level of access to the records.

Below is an example of the finished product.

The WSSU Archives does hold these items in our collection and planning a visit would be one way of seeing the portfolios. We have also scanned these items and they are available in the Rams Commons by following the link below. Browsing the Faculty Publications will allow visitors to view PDF versions of the portfolios at any time.

Rams Commons

This is to introduce the Rams Commons, the digital repository of the Winston Salem State University Archives. We are working hard to make available many of the records from WSSU. The digital collection is divided into three sections. The 1st section contains student theses. There are currently 11 available for searching but that number should be growing in the near future. The 2nd section contains Faculty Publications. There are 37 available digitally dating back as far as 1977. The final section provides access to library publications. This ranges from friends of the library material to C.E. Gaines' archival collection.

Please feel free to visit the Rams Commons by clicking the link below and view the material that is now available digitally.

Simon G. Atkins Collection

Simon Green Atkins (1863-1934) was the founder and first President of the Slater Industrial Academy (which would become WSSU) in Winston Salem, NC. The collection of records from Simon Atkins' tenure as President of the school is now available at the WSSU Archives. Included in the collection are correspondence, financial records, as well as publications and reports among other various other types of records. The collection was reprocessed and a new finding aid was created. The finding aid for the collection can be found by following the link below, or by visiting the WSSU Archives homepage and browsing through the manuscript collections.
