Personal Library of Dr. Simon G. Atkins
"A
little library, growing larger every year, is an honorable part of a man's
history. It is a man's duty to have books. A library is not a luxury, but one
of the necessaries of life,” wrote abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher. Dr. Simon
Green Atkins, educator, religious leader, community developer and founder of Slater
Industrial
Academy ,
now Winston-Salem
State
University ,
understood Beecher ’s
philosophy. Dr. Atkins managed to amass nearly 500 books over his 71 year
lifespan.
The Simon Green Atkins Book Collection contains poetry by Virgil, edition of Carter G. Woodson’s The Journal of Negro History, and guides to understanding government and laws.
